H.E. Dr. Hajo Sani, OON, Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, delivered Nigeria’s National Statement on April 7, at the plenary session of the 221st UNESCO Executive Board. Nigeria reaffirmed its support for UNESCO’s multidisciplinary mandate and emphasized Africa-centered development, inclusive education, cultural preservation, and institutional collaboration.

Key points from Nigeria’s statement:

✔️ Nigeria welcomed the improvements made to the Draft 43 C/5 document and emphasized the importance of choosing a budget scenario that protects programmatic impact across sectors.
✔️ Commended UNESCO for allocating 27% of regional funds to Africa, reinforcing the Organization’s commitment to the continent’s sustainable development and improved communication visibility.
✔️ Reiterated support for UNESCO’s comprehensive mandate and Nigeria’s contributions through its participation in normative frameworks, governing bodies, and intergovernmental committees.
✔️ Highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to media and information literacy through the establishment of a Category 2 Centre in Abuja, now undergoing final approval for endorsement at the 43rd General Conference.
✔️ Showcased national education reforms, including the TESS initiative for systemic transformation of education in Nigerian states, and the AGILE Project, focused on empowering adolescent girls through access to safe learning environments.
✔️ Shared progress in integrating UNESCO’s Geoscience and Geoparks Programme into Nigeria’s National Council on Hydrocarbons, aligning sustainable resource management with petroleum industry standards.
✔️ Celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Convention on Cultural Diversity with national cultural showcases and the publication of “Cultural Odyssey: 20 Years of Implementation of UNESCO’s 2005 Convention in Nigeria.”
✔️ Expressed strong alignment with the Operational Strategy for Priority Africa, as well as UNESCO’s focus on gender equality, youth engagement, and the SIDS agenda.
✔️ Called for unified, integrated action among Member States, promoting peace, sustainability, and international cooperation

Today, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alh. Mohammed Idris - @fminonigeria together with the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, H.E. Dr. Hajo Sani, OON, met with UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Mr. Tawfik Jelassi, to advance discussions on the proposed establishment of the first-ever Category 2 Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute in Nigeria.

Slated for consideration at the UNESCO General Conference in November, this landmark initiative aims to position Nigeria at the forefront of global efforts to combat disinformation, misinformation, fake news, and hate speech, while also promoting critical thinking. Once established, the MIL Institute will serve as a pioneering hub for empowering individuals to responsibly navigate the modern media landscape, thereby fostering media literacy.
