We are thrilled to announce that the Kano Durbar Festival has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during the 19th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción, Republic of Paraguay. The Kano Durbar, a grand annual festival, takes place during Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, celebrating Nigeria’s cultural richness. The festival features a majestic procession of horses, royal pageantry, music, and traditional performances, symbolizing peace, unity, and the preservation of Hausa heritage.
This prestigious recognition highlights the enduring importance of the festival, not only to Nigeria but to the world, as it showcases an age-old tradition that brings communities together and educates younger generations about their cultural identity. The inclusion of the Kano Durbar on the UNESCO list is a monumental step in safeguarding Nigeria’s intangible cultural heritage and promoting global cultural diversity.
