Nigeria has reached a historic milestone in the field of education and media development. Today, at the UNESCO General Conference, Nigeria’s International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI) was officially ratified as a Category 2 Institute under UNESCO, making it the first institute of its kind to be established in Africa.
The International Media and Information Literacy Institute is designed to serve as a center of excellence for media and information literacy, research, training, and capacity building. Its mission is to empower individuals, communities, and institutions with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate, analyze, and use media and information responsibly and effectively in today’s digital age.
By hosting the first UNESCO-affiliated institute of this nature in Africa, Nigeria positions itself as a regional leader in media and information literacy, fostering informed and critically thinking societies. IMILI will provide platforms for research, policy development, training programs, and knowledge exchange, contributing to sustainable development, education, and innovation across the continent.
This milestone reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to building capacities, promoting media literacy, and advancing knowledge societies in line with UNESCO’s global objectives. IMILI is set to become a hub for innovation, education, and empowerment that will benefit Africa and the wider international community.
