The Permanent Delegation of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to UNESCO is pleased to announce that H.E. Dr. Hajo Sani, OON, has been elected Chairperson of the Programme and External Relations (PX) Commission at the 223rd Session of the UNESCO Executive Board, held on 20 November 2025.
This election is a significant recognition of Nigeria’s continued leadership, active engagement, and constructive contribution to UNESCO’s work across all programme sectors. It also reflects Dr. Sani’s extensive diplomatic experience, her advocacy for gender equality and development, and her longstanding commitment to the advancement of UNESCO’s global priorities, particularly Africa.
About the PX Commission
The Programme and External Relations (PX) Commission is one of the three standing commissions of the Executive Board. It is responsible for examining and advising on:
- The implementation of UNESCO’s programmes in Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, and Communication & Information
- Progress in achieving Global Priority Africa and Gender Equality
- UNESCO’s external relations, partnerships, and cooperation with Member States, UN entities, and international organizations
- The monitoring of programme delivery, reforms, and strategic orientations
- Issues relating to the preparation of the C/4 Medium-Term Strategy and C/5 Programme & Budget documents
The PX Commission plays a central role in guiding UNESCO’s programmatic direction and ensuring that the Organization’s initiatives respond effectively to the needs and priorities of Member States.
Nigeria is honoured to assume this important responsibility and remains committed to strengthening UNESCO’s mandate in promoting peace, sustainable development, and intercultural dialogue.
