Dr. Hajo Sani, OON, met with UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Dr. Tawfik Jelassi, to discuss key groundbreaking initiatives poised to position Nigeria at the forefront of global progress.
One key focus of the discussion was Nigeria’s proposal to host the first-ever Category 2 Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute, a transformative initiative to be considered for approval at UNESCO’s next General Conference.
This institute aims to address critical issues such as disinformation, misinformation, fake news, and hate speech by fostering critical thinking and responsible media engagement. As a pioneering hub, the MIL Institute will empower individuals to navigate the complexities of today’s media landscape while promoting informed citizenship and media literacy. This bold initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to combating the challenges of the digital age and fostering a well-informed, engaged society.
Abuja’s Bid for UNESCO Creative Cities Network

Joining this prestigious network will not only enhance Abuja’s global recognition but also harness the creative sector as a driver for sustainable development and innovation. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader vision of leveraging cultural richness and creativity to address global challenges and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
