On 15th December, 2022, H.E. Dr. Hajo Sani, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, was elected Chairperson of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of Armed Conflict at its 17th Session, taking over from H.E. Ms Claudia Reinprecht, Ambassador, Permanente Delegate of Austria to UNESCO.
This is the first time since 1954 that an African Nation is Chairing this vital Committee. In addition, H.E. Dr. Hajo Sani’s Chairpersonship further reaffirms the Committee’s commitment to ensuring an equitable representation of the different regions.
Established by the 1999 Second Protocol, the Committee works to promote and implement the 1999 Second Protocol.
