Yesterday, 15th April, 2026, at the ongoing 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, Nigeria formally assumed its responsibilities as Chair of the PX Commission, with H. E. Dr. Hajo Sani, OON, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, presiding over her first session in this capacity on behalf of the country.
Nigeria’s leadership of the PX Commission follows its election to the position during the 43rd UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand last year, reflecting the confidence of Member States in Nigeria’s constructive role within UNESCO’s governance processes.
The PX Commission occupies a central place within UNESCO’s institutional architecture. It is responsible for examining programme implementation matters, partnerships, and cross-cutting priorities that support the effective delivery of UNESCO’s mandate across education, the sciences, culture, and communication & information. Through its work, the Commission helps ensure that decisions adopted by Member States are translated into coordinated action and measurable results on the ground.
Nigeria’s assumption of the Chairmanship of the PX Commission underscores the country’s continued commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and contributing actively to the implementation of UNESCO’s programme priorities. It also reflects Nigeria’s readiness to support consensus-building among Member States and advance collective efforts toward peace, sustainable development, and shared global progress.
