Her Excellency, Dr. Hajo Sani, the Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO, was at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of UNESCO’s Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The conference was organized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Permanent Delegation of Greece to UNESCO in cooperation with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and was held in Delphi (Greece), from 17-18 November 2022, with the theme: The Next 50 – The future of World Heritage in challenging times enhancing resilience and sustainability.
The event which took the form of an International Conference brought together States-Parties serving in the World Heritage Committee and Experts from all over the world not only to celebrate the achievements of the Convention, but to also examine and proffer solutions to its major challenges – Representativeness, Accessibility, and Sustainability.
The Conference was kicked off with opening remarks from the Director-General of UNESCO – Madame Audrey Azoulay and the Prime Minister of Greece – Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The DG in her remarks, presented a “three-pronged Action-Plan to make World Heritage more representative, accessible and sustainable over the coming decades.”
Nigeria was represented by the Ambasador, Permanent Delegate of Nigeria to UNESCO and Dr. Ishanlosen Odiaua, the Vice President of the International Council on Monuments and Site (ICOMOS).
