Her Excellency, Dr. Hajo Sani, attended the Transforming Education Summit, held at the United Nations HQ in New York from 16th to 19th September, 2022.
The Transforming Education Summit is one of the key initiatives under the ‘Our Common Agenda’, launched by UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in September 2021. The Summit was convened in response to the global education crisis as a result of Covid19. The summit aimed at elevating education to the top of the global political agenda, mobilize global political commitment, solidarity, ambition, and action in order to “reverse the slide on SDG 4, reimagine education, and accelerate progress on education and the 2030 Agenda” as well as sow the seeds to transform education in a rapidly changing world.
The Summit included a Youth-led mobilization day held on 16th September with the participation of a wide range of stakeholders, Summit Solutions day on 17th September with participation from education ministers and the Leaders day on 19th September, which had the participations of Heads of Government. The Leaders Day also featured six spotlight sessions:
1) Education in crisis situation
2) Foundational learning
3) Education for sustainable development
4) Digital learning
5) Gender equality; and
6) Education finance
The main expected outcome of the summit were:
“National and International commitments to transform education, Greater public engagement around and support for transforming education; and a vision statement on transforming education from the Secretary General”
